We’re sad to hear the news that Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora – known as the Barefoot Diva – has passed away aged 70, following a long period of ill health that resulted in her retirement earlier this year.
The Grammy Award-winning singer will be fondly remembered for bringing the soulful, melancholic morna of her native islands to an international audience with her wonderful, world-weary voice. Here she is singing Sodade, a Creole word capturing the ‘nostalgic longing’ that’s an inherent part of Cape Verdean morna.
