The city of New Orleans has spawned some of the greatest names in blues, jazz, funk and gospel, and in 2011 – the 110th anniversary of Louis Armstrong’s birth – the city continues to thrive as a musical melting pot second to none. In our new in-depth feature, author and journalist Garth Cartwright celebrates the city’s musical heritage from cornet player Buddy Bolden in the early 1900s to rapper Lil Wayne today.
Garth’s currently visiting New Orleans and on his return he’ll give us the low-down on what’s hot and where to find it in this great musical city. In the meantime, you can read his in-depth feature, watch archive footage of legendary musicians including a trailer for the new Louis Armstrong film being screened at London’s Barbican in November, and submerse yourself in some of the greatest music the world has ever known.
