Texan guitarist and wordsmith Sam Baker returns to the UK for a 16-date tour that kicks off in Gateshead tonight.
Sam’s story is well chronicled – an extraordinary journey of having to relearn the use of his brain and body after a train he was travelling on in Peru in 1986 was bombed. Though lucky to survive, Baker was left seriously injured at the age of 32. As he recounts on his website, the process of recovery has been like “a climb up a steep embankment” including numerous operations, learning how to walk and talk again, and getting parts of his memory back. Despite severe hearing loss and having to relearn to play the guitar, Sam has gone on to develop his own “uniquely hushed and quietly powerful performance style”. Sam put his first CD Mercy out in 2004, “the first in a trilogy of compelling song paintings with sparse instrumentation and poetic delivery, followed by Pretty World in 2007, and Cotton in 2009″.
Sam’s working on a new album due out in 2013. Watch him in action performing Slots from the album Pretty World and go hear him live at one of the venues below.
No shows booked at the moment.
