Another lovely, oblique number that shares more than a little with Sandy Denny. I don’t want to overstate things but Martha is a rare talent and Winter Flowers from Milkmaids And Architects is frankly gorgeous. Martha is of course the daughter of Steve Tilston, himself an acclaimed singer-songwriter and her step mother is London – Irish singer Maggie Boyle. Growing up with the likes of Ralph McTell, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch sat at the kitchen table playing guitar with her father and her step mother’s love of traditional folk, it’s perhaps not surprising that she chose music. Although in fact, she’s also inherited a talent for painting from her birth mother and first took to the stage as an actor. Martha has a compelling ability to draw the listener into her world, creating an intimate almost confessional feel, enhanced by the simple unflustered arrangement of this song.
